Introduction

IBM Storage was always known as a top performer when it comes to storage. Its Deskstar Hard Disk Drives we're no doubt one of the fastest performing drives since its early Deskstar 5 days. The Deskstar 75GXP range was the king of hard disk drives, boasting the fastest the drive money can buy at its time. Although its speed was unquestionable, the 75GXP drives were badly criticised with reliability issues and often tainted with the label “Deathstar”.

Fast forward a few years to our present time, IBM has sold its storage division to Hitachi, thus making Deskstar and Microdrives products under Hitachi Global Storage Technology. Whether Deskstar problems had forced IBM to sell off its storage division or not, is something we can’t answer. The Deskstar has switched owners, but do they remain the same? We’ll find out.

This time around, Hitachi has given myWORLD Hardware the opportunity to evaluate their latest offering after its acquisition of IBM’s storage division, the Hitachi HDS722525VLSA80, a SATA Deskstar with 250GB capacity. Its arrival was quite late when compared with its rival SATA drives but hopefully its overall performance will justify the wait.
